The Founder
The Founder
Matt Hancock is the founder of The Mental Edge Co. He has a sporting history in a variety of sports spanning back to Primary School, however basketball and rowing were his two select sports. Matt has been playing basketball for 26 years, since he was 5, although he did not take the sport seriously until he was in highschool at Scotch College in Melbourne. He played all his junior basketball at Waverley Falcons Basketball Association where his teams won multiple National Classic titles and Victorian Championship titles from Under 16s to 18s.
In Matt’s endeavour to play at the highest possible level, he decided to leave Waverley and pursue SEABL with Sandringham Sabres. His hard work and dedication paid off as Matt was awarded the honour of MVP for his high school in back-to-back years, along with Team Captain of the First team.
During high school Matt also began rowing for Scotch College, as his height and size deemed him a prime fit. Whilst rowing in the 9 and 10 First crews, he won multiple State and Australian titles within the sport, gaining interest from US College Coaches.
However, due to the training regimes required for each sport, Matt could not continue to compete at an elite level in both as well as continue his studies. Hence a decision had to be made between the two and Matt chose basketball as the sport he wanted to pursue. Having made this difficult decision, Matt pushed harder and further with his training which enabled him in Year 10 to play with a Victorian Select team that travelled numerous states in the US playing various high schools. From this tour Matt attracted multiple NCAA Division 1 offers along with multiple NCAA Division 2 offers. But one College raised above all, Lamar University which was being coached by Patrick Knight, the son of the legendary Bob Knight.
Matt spent 3 years at Lamar University on a full scholarship, an NCAA Division 1 College in Texas, starting 7 games as a Freshman (first year).
After 3 years at Lamar University, it was deemed time for Matt to pursue other routes. This is where Matt was recruited to the University of West Alabama when he entered the transfer portal. After receiving a full scholarship to the NCAA Division 2 College, Matt was unfortunately subject to a season ending injury a few days before the start of the season. Unknowing of the system and how to delay a year without losing eligibility, Matt’s season was over and his College career.
This is where things developed, Matt was approached by an Agent and established himself as a Development Player in the NBL with Melbourne United. First taking the court in the NBL Blitz in the Gold Coast, Queensland, he suited up for numerous other games during the regular season. However, after the season Matt left Melbourne United for the Illawarra Hawks where he spent the next three NBL seasons in various roles.
In the offseason of the NBL, Matt played in Western Australia (SBL) for Geraldton, Queensland (QBL) for Rockhampton, Gladstone and Sunshine Coast and Waverley Falcons and Eltham Wildcats (NBL1) before calling it time on his basketball career in 2021.
Matt completed his Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Sports Psychology and Accounting during his College tenure. Since then, he has acquired a Certificate III in Sport and Recreation, Certificate in Forensic Psychology and multiple other certificates. Matt has been a student of Sport Psychology since he was 15, working with some of the best in the World including Paul Blackburn and Dr Jack Singer, who trained US Olympic athletes to win gold medals.
